About Every Basket Helps
African Market Baskets (AMB) formed a non-profit organization in Ghana in 2009, named Every Basket Helps (EBH), to better manage its humanitarian projects in the villages. In addition to paying above going rates for the baskets up front, AMB donates a percentage of its profits each year to EBH.
The founder of African Market Baskets, Steve Karowe, is on the board of directors of Every Basket Helps, and volunteers his time, as do all the members of the non-profit, thus insuring that 100% of the proceeds donated actually go toward the intended projects.
Since 2020, African Market Baskets is purchasing and distributing masks to the weavers in Bolgatanga for free, along with providing education about the importance of mask-wearing and social distancing. Our multifaceted effort to help mitigate the spread of COVID-19 in the Upper East region includes installing handwashing stations in rural areas, and as well, we are at every market (every third day), where we hand out masks ad impart education about COVID-19 best practices.
In 2019 Every Basket Helps™ is partnering with the Ministry of Health in Ghana for the seventh consecutive year, to provide health care to villagers (weavers and their families). Ghana has a national health care system and EBH is paying the registration fees for 3,000 villagers to register for health care or renew their existing registration so they may all enjoy free health care for the year. EBH arranged with the Health Ministry to travel to each village and organize the registration of all the weavers, after which EBH pays all the necessary fees.
In 2009, EBH completed a community weaving center serving two villages and over 250 weavers. In addition to providing a place for all the weavers to gather and produce baskets, the community weaving center is being used for village meetings and for school studies.
Also in 2009-2018, EBH donated school supplies for children in 3 villages to enable them to attend school. This project continues in 2019 as we donated school supplies for nearly 700 children, in two elementary schools.
To help reduce deaths from malaria, in 2018 we distributed over 500 insecticide treated bed-nets to 4 villages and an orphanage. For more information check out “Our Story” on our website:
